History

Born on 15 July 1896, Joseph enrolled for one year only in 1915 when he joined the evening class to study architecture. At that time, his address was 37 Dorset Street and his occupation was given as, 'Architects apprentice.' Of the 524 students attending GSoA in 1915 – 1916, 38 were recorded as architect students and measurers. There was a well- known architect called Joseph Cowan working in Glasgow from c.a. 1874 – 1900, with a house at 58 Hill Street in Garnethill close to St Aloysius College, with which he was closely associated. He was architect to the archdiocese of Glasgow, but apparently only received the commissions that Peter Paul Pugin was either too busy or unwilling to undertake. At least one of his sons followed him into practice and it may be that this Joseph was a grandson or other near relative.
