Andrew Dick was born on 29 May 1885 in Glasgow, son of Mary Dick (nee McKenzie) and Andrew Dick, a saw mill foreman. His studies began at The Glasgow School of Art in the 1903-04 session as an evening student studying drawing, whilst working as a photo engraver. He returned to his studies from 1912-1916 continuing as an evening student taking classes in drawing and painting and life drawing, living for the first two years in Glasgow before moving to Neilston in 1914. His occupation at this time is noted as a draughtsman and designer. During the war he served as a sapper with the Royal Engineers. He returned to The Glasgow School of Art for the 1919-20 session, again as an evening student taking classes this time in modelling whilst living at Chappelfield House in Barrhead. He continued with further classes in modelling in the 1921-22 and 1922-23 sessions. Andrew Dick is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
