History
Jean Nisbet Duncan started taking evening classes in Design at The Glasgow School of Art in 1917.
She lived in Smith Street, Paisley Road West, and was born on 8 November 1894 or 1895; both years are recorded.
She continued studying for seven years, taking the same evening class every year from 1917-18 to 1923-24.
When she started the classes her occupation was dressmaker however in 1919-20 and for the subsequent years she is described as a dress designer.
In two years - 1918-19 and 1919-20 - she received Design and Decorative Art bursaries from The Haldane Trust.
In the 1920-21 Calendar, under the Evening Class Results for 1919-20, the Design Monthly competition second prize was split between a Miss Jean Duncan and a W R Scott.
There is an earlier record in the student register for 1911-12 of a Jean Duncan, from Newlands, coming with eight other girls from the Eastwood area to attend a Special Needlework Class on Tuesday afternoons with Miss MacBeth and Miss Swanson. It is not clear whether this record is Jean Nisbet Duncan; at this time she would have been about 15 or 16 years old.
