History
Arthur Leslie Hamilton was born in Helensburgh on the 25th of July 1892, one of two children of Lilian Millar Shaw and James Whitelaw Hamilton, painter. He attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1909 to 1915 as a part-time student of architecture. During the First World War, Hamilton served as a Lieutenant of the 1st battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. He was deployed to Mesopotamia and was killed in action in October 1918, one of the last days of the war. He is buried in the Basra Memorial near Mushak in an unmarked grave. As a result of his father's renown as a painter, a 1916 portrait of him by James Guthrie is held in the collection of Glasgow Museums at the Glasgow Museums Resource Center and is available to view on the BBC: Your Paintings website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/lieutenant-a-leslie-hamilton-18931918-84333. Arthur Leslie Hamilton is commemorated in The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
