John Craig McFadyen was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 27th March 1887, one of five children of Agnes McFadyen (née McCarthur) and William McFadyen, a carpet pattern designer. McFadyen attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1903 to 1905 and from 1910 to 1914 as a student of drawing and painting. During the First World War, McFadyen served as 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Division Ammunition Column of the Royal Field Artillery. He died in action at Messines on 6th June 1917 and is buried in the Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery in Belgium. McFadyen is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour. According to the Du Ruvigny Roll of Honour on Ancestry, McFadyen also attended Whitehill Higher Grade School and Glasgow University, where he received his Arts degree. After qualifying as a teacher he was trained further at the School of Art. Before joining the Artists' Rifles OTC in February 1916, he taught in a school in Hightae. McFadyen's picture and biography are also available on Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour.
