History
Robert Norman Houghton Mackellar was born in Govan on the 5th of March 1890, one of four children of Ada F and Peter N MacKellar, a confectioner's agent. Robert attended The Glasgow School of Art in 1902 as a young part-time student in Drawing and Painting, and went back from 1906 to 1911 as a student in Architecture, alternating between full-time to part-time while also working as an architectural draughtsman.
In 1904, Robert was articled to John Nesbitt of Glasgow, and moved to Miller & Black in 1911. He was recruited by Thomas Martin Cappon to work as an assistant on the Dundee Training College and Demonstration School in Park Place, and is credited as being largely responsible for the design of the building. Once this was complete, Robert was invited to work under Charles James McNair. During the First World War, Robert served in the Highland Light Infantry as a Sergeant. After the war, he moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in 1920 to become partner with Cackett & Burns Dick. He was elected to FRIBA in 1936. He died in 1973.
Robert Norman Houghton MacKellar is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's World War One Roll of Honour.
