History
Richard Poulton, was born in Aberdeen on 5 August 1892, one of 2 surviving children of Mary Ann (née Forbes) and Richard Louis Poulton, a house painter. Poulton studied at The Glasgow School of Art from 1910 until 1914 taking evening classes in drawing and painting while working as a house painter. His studies were interrupted by WW1 when he served as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers. He returned to The Glasgow School of Art for the 1918-1919 session to study stained glass design. In 1923, he married Catherine Gilchrist Malley from Rutherglen. At this time, he was employed as a draughtsman for memorial windows while his bride was a blouse machinist. He and his wife lived in Rutherglen and in 1927, Poulton's work 'The Cowpuncher' was exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. However, he later returned to his former career as a house painter. He died in 1953, still living in Rutherglen, survived by his wife Catherine. Richard Poulton is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
