History

Mary Rodgers was born in 1877 and attended The Glasgow School of Art continuously between 1915 and 1918 and again from 1919 to 1920. During this time she resided at 68 Greenhill Road, Rutherglen, later moving nearby to 'Edmund Cottage.' Her tuition was subsidised by Lanark Local Authority.

Rodgers was also in fact a student of The Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, which later became known as The Queen's College. Following the achievement of a Diploma, students from this institution were allowed to go on and undertake further studies at The Glasgow School of Art, which is what Rodgers chose to do. Her occupation for the academic year commencing 1915 is recorded as 'Student of The College of Domestic Science' and we know she undertook her studies by evening, specialising in Textiles. One of the aims of The College of Domestic Science was to train unemployed young women and war widows to become teachers of Domestic Science. It is unknown whether Rodgers was widowed by the Great War, although we do know she became a teacher of dress-making , needle-work and millinery. She would have been taught by the notable embroidery designer Miss Ann MacBeth and also by Miss Anne K. Arthur. Domestic Science students were instructed in the design of geometric patterns on flat and round surfaces, treatment of velvet, applique, modelled stitchery, gold-work, colour and composition, drawing of plant form, lettering and fashion plate drawing.
