History
Hugh D. McKay Ross was born in 1894 and studied at The Glasgow School of Art for the academic year 1914 to 1915. During this period, Ross resided at 142 Balgrayhill Road in Springburn, north of Glasgow city centre. His tuition was subsidised by the City Local Authority.
Ross attended The School as an evening student of Architecture. His occupation at this time is recorded as 'Architecture Draughtsman,' so we may surmise that he studied Architecture as part of his professional development. The renowned Professor of Architectural Design, Eugene Bourdon, was the director of Architectural Studies at The School for the academic year that Ross was in attendance. Bourdon was sadly killed in action in the Battle of the Somme the following year, however his influence and contribution to classical architecture in Glasgow is highly regarded.
