History
Daisy May Roy Russell was born in 1893 and attended The Glasgow School of Art for four years, between 1916 and 1920 and again, for one final year in 1921. During this time she resided at 11 Ardgowan Square, Greenock. Her tuition was subsidised by Renfrew Local Authority.
Russell was a daytime student of Drawing and Painting, specialising in Lettering and Fashion under the tutelage of Miss Jessie R. Allan in her first year. In her second year she studied Anatomy, including the 'Course from the Living Animal.' This was delivered in partnership with the Veterinary College on Buccleuch Street, whereby students were allowed to draw from living animals and also the skeletons of tigers, horses, cows and dogs. Russell continued as a daytime student of Drawing and Painting for the duration of her time at The School. She was awarded her Diploma in 1921 and her Post-Diploma in 1923.
Russell went on to have some success as a painter and exhibited a watercolour piece with The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1928, which was sold for the sum of £2.
