History
Henry Bell Russell was born in 1897 and attended The Glasgow School of Art for two, possibly three years, between 1914 and 1917. During this time he resided at 9 Minerva Street, south-west of Glasgow city centre. Russell's tuition was subsidised by the City Local Authority.
Russell was a student of Drawing and Painting and undertook his studies by day during his first year, changing to evening studies in his second year. His occupation is first listed as 'Junior Clerk' and later simply as 'Clerk' so this may explain why he later chose to pursue his studies by evening. Russell received a £1 bursary from the Haldane Trust for the academic year commencing in 1914.
Russell was enrolled again for the academic year commencing in 1916, however a footnote in the register claims that he was 'on service since December,' meaning that he likely was called to war. Whether Russell returned to The School after his service is unknown, although his name is not included in the list of successors for the 1916/1917 session.
