Margaret Robb Shanks was born on the 16th of August 1894 and resided at Rubislaw, Blairhill, Coatbridge, while completing her studies at The Glasgow School of Art. Shanks was part of a group of girls who started attending classes at the School while still studying at The High School for Girls. They undertook a variety of classes, with Shanks attending afternoon classes in Anatomy and Modelling during the 1912-13 session. While not all of the girls pursued their studies Shanks stayed at the School until 1919. From 1914-1919 she undertook Drawing and Painting day classes.
