Ukraine Twinning Project

At the beginning of March 2023, GSA’s UK-Ukraine Twinning Project, ‘Developing and Promoting Sustainable Cultural Heritage in Disaster Contexts,’ was awarded funding from Research England. The grant is managed by Universities UK International, and supported by the Cormack Consultancy Group, and runs until the end of August 2023.

The project is a collaboration between GSA and our Ukrainian twin, The Lviv National Academy of Arts (LNAA). It focuses on two interrelated objectives: safeguarding the LNAA Archive & Collection from the ongoing threat posed by the war in Ukraine; and developing a cultural heritage research partnership. GSA Archives and Collections are leading on the first objective, while colleagues in GSA’s Research Department are leading on the second.

The A&C team are helping LNAA staff to organise and prepare their cultural assets and procure the digitisation equipment that they require for the project. Resources and workshops are being developed by A&C in order to mentor LNAA colleagues as they develop methodologies and workflows for the capture and documentation of their important collections. And an online archive will be established in order to store and disseminate the digitised assets, increasing their visibility while also safeguarding them for the future.
