The art school experience has always been about more than just getting a degree. This exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into student life across The GSA’s history.
Arranged around ephemeral items including event posters, programmes, and amateur photographs, Pastimes showcases the rich and lasting contributions students have made, even in the brief span of their studies.
From DIY fashion shows and collaborative publications to a 1930s filmmaking society, the creative interests of students have always exceeded their formal education. Works in this exhibition precede and predict the introduction of courses like Art Writing, Fashion Design, and Photography and the Moving Image.
Students have long valued social consciousness alongside celebration and creativity. The items on display demonstrate a GSA calendar packed with fundraising for urgent political causes, alongside ambitiously staged dramatic productions, and elaborate masked balls.
Spanning over one hundred years, this selection of materials from The GSA Archives and Collections reflects the diverse interests of GSA students over time, and how their activities have shaped connections between students, artists, and the wider Glasgow community.
Pastimes has been curated by PhD students Kiah Endelman Music and Molly McCracken as part of a SGSAH-funded research internship at The GSA Archives and Collections.
Pastimes will be open to the public Monday-Friday from 31st July – 11th August, 10am – 4pm at Window on Heritage in the Reid Building on GSA’s Garnethill Campus.
The exhibition will then be open weekly on Fridays, 10am-4pm until 22nd September.
