Biographical history
Born Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. Davidson was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1884-1903. In 1885 he was awarded a Local examination, 2nd grade certificate in freehand drawing.
He was also a member of staff at the School, during which time he held the following positions: Assistant Master (decorative art) metalwork, wrought & repousse 1897/8 to 1919/20; Instructor (Design & Decorative Art) gold & silversmith’s work; metalwork & repousse 1903-1919/20; Instructor (Design & Decorative Art) Bookbinding; Leatherwork 1914/15 to 1919/20; Instructor (Design & Decorative Art) Woodcarving 1914/15 to 1919/20; Enamels 1920/21 to 1927/8; Decorative Leatherwork from 1921/22; Bookbinding, Leatherwork from 1929/30. At retirement (1934/5) Metal work – gold and silver, book binding and leatherwork.
He founded a metalwork and Design Studio in Glasgow in the 1890s, and wrote a book on educational metalcraft in 1927.
His brother William A Davidson also studied at GSA and worked as a silversmith, going on to take up a teaching position at the Art School in Dundee.
